Abstract

Imaging has always been an important component of the clinical evaluation of pediatric patients. There are many different types of x-ray images that can be taken of children in the dental office to assist in diagnosis. These include the panoramic (OPG) and orthodontic (cephalometric) extraoral images, intraoral images such as bitewings and periapicals (little films that go inside the mouth) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Rapid technological advances in imaging are making noninvasive evaluation of a wide range of pediatric diseases possible. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are two imaging modalities that do not involve ionizing radiation and are preferred imaging modalities in the pediatric population. Through the use of proper and innovative radiographic techniques the dentist and staff can obtain diagnostic radiographs with minimum harm and maximum comfort for the pediatric patient. The purpose of this article is to provide a discussion on the guidelines for radiographic exposure intervals for the reduction of ionizing radiation and innovative techniques that are helpful in conducting radiographic examinations for the pediatric patient.
