Abstract

The oral cavity constitutes one of the principal ecological niches for aerobic/anaerobic bacteria. Some published studies highlight the growing prevalence of obligate anaerobes of oral origin that are resistant to some of the antibiotics, giving rise to need to investigate alternative antibiotics for therapeutic or prophylactic use. Moxifloxacin is advanced new generation synthetic Fluoroquinolone derivative which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with excellent bacterial coverage. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy of Moxifloxacin in acute odontogenic infections and to find out the effectiveness of daily single dose antibiotic therapy orally for safety of the patients.

The study group consisted of 25 subjects who presented with signs and symptoms of odontogenic infection. Moxifloxacin 400 mg/day in a single daily dose orally for 5 days and recalled.

A total of 22 subjects showed 100% remission of swelling, 1 subject showed 76–99% reduction of swelling while there were 2 subjects who did not show any response

Moxifloxacin 400 mg once daily for 5 days resulted in significantly better reduction in swelling and overall clinical response. Therefore Moxifloxacin seems to be an effective and well tolerated option for treatment of odontogenic infections.
