Piercing is today's popular form of body art and self-expression. It may seem totally safe because some celebrities use piercings to flaunt their style or attitude. The oral and perioral piercing has a long history as part of religious, tribal, cultural or sexual symbolism and nowadays there is a high incidence of oral and perioral piercing in the adolescent population. This practice has a long history as part of religious, tribal, cultural or sexual symbolism. This is of concern to dental and medical professionals because of the risk and complications to their health. This article reviews current knowledge on injuries or diseases that might be produced by piercing in the oral cavity.
