Abstract

Carnoy's solution was first used as a fixative agent in histology and historically, was compounded with 100% ethanol, chloroform and glacial acetic acid in a 6:3:1 ratio with added ferric chloride. It was traditionally applied to a lesion as a cauterizing agent characterized by its moderate penetration, rapid local fixation and excellent hemostatic action. Enucleation followed by chemical cauterization with modified carnoy's solution provided lower recurrence rate and lesser morbidity.
