Periodontal regeneration includes complete recovery of the structural and functional aspects of periodontal apparatus, along with the formation of alveolar bone, a new functionally oriented connective attachment through collagen fibers on the new cementum. Regeneration of the periodontal tissues that occurs in an open system permanently contaminated by a significant bacterial load is a complex phenomenon which involves the interplay between various processes in a timely manner. Occlusal forces on the tooth complex in transverse and axial planes are added to this complexity which affects the stability of healing wound, often leading to incomplete regeneration. Tissue engineering is an emerging trend in periodontal regeneration. The concept of Tissue engineering in periodontology applies the principles of engineering and life sciences towards the development of biological techniques that can restore lost alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and root cementum.
