The basic science of microbiology and practice of endodontics are most closely associated. Most diseases of the dental pulp and peri radicular tissues are associated with micro organisms. It is important that clinicians understand the close relationship of micro organisms with endodontic disease to develop an effective treatment rationale. Current knowledge of the taxonomy of infected root canal flora is based on advanced microbial culture techniques. The use of molecular genetic techniques in endodontic microbiology is clarifying and expanding this knowledge base.
