To investigate the relationship between chronic localized periodontitis & pre-term birth & to examine whether chronic localized of mother during pregnancy influenced the birth weight of the new born.
A total of 50 subjects will be examined admitted in the Gynecology ward of SSG hospital. The subjects will be examined 3 days post-partum.
The subjects will be divided into two groups. The test group will include females who have delivery before 37th week of pregnancy and/or the weight of newborn is < 2500g, or has preterm rupture of membranes or spontaneous pre-term delivery. The control group will include females who have delivery after 37th gestational week and/or newborn weighing > 2500g.
No significant association is found between preterm/low birth weight and chronic periodontitis, the criteria being bleeding on probing and having at least one site at > 4mm probing depth (p = 0.6). There was no significant difference between weights of newborns of mothers with periodontitis and mothers without periodontitis. CONCLUSION: The results do not support the hypothesis that chronic periodontitis of pregnant women could lead to pre-term birth and low birth weight.
