Abstract

To compare the gingival marginal leakage with Autoradiography technique using Ca45 in class II composite resin restorations with and without retention grooves.

100 premolars indicated for orthodontic extraction were selected and divided into 2 groups. Group A: Conventional class II cavity preparation with proximal beveling. Group B: Conventional class II cavity preparation with proximal beveling and retentive grooves in the axio-proximal and cervical line angles. Approximating sized preformed crown was selected and kept aside. Etching followed by application of bonding agent was done. Composite filling was done incrementally. Additional material was added over the tooth and preformed crown was placed over it under constant pressure and fillings were bulk cured. Extraction of all the specimens was done and the whole specimen except for restored area was painted with nail varnish. Specimens were immersed in radioactive solution for 17 hours and then washed with detergent and kept under running water for an hour. Specimens were sectioned mesiodistally and kept in X- ray packet in dark room for 24hours. The X-ray packets were then exposed to X-ray for 0.1sec and X-ray films were developed in regular manner. The autoradiographs were evaluated according to laid down scores and results were evaluated statistically.

Retention grooves at axioproximal and cervical line angles of the approximal box significantly reduced the gingival marginal microleakage
