Abstract

The gag reflex is stimulated and controlled by nerve endings situated in the soft palate, pharynx, and pharyngeal part of the tongue. Suggested methods for handling this problem include various behavioural and pharmacological techniques. [1]

In day to day dental practice the dentists frequently come across patients who have extreme oral sensitivity by which they are unable to tolerate any foreign material in the oral cavity and often compliant of nausea, gagging or vomiting during the dental procedures which create a difficult situation to manage. Maxillary impressions or posterior intra oral radiographs can be difficult and uncomfortable for such patients. [2]

This article describes a simple clinical technique for temporary elimination of gage reflex by superimposed simultaneous stimulation of the taste buds.
