Abstract

The diagnostic use of saliva has attracted the attention of numerous investigators because of the noninvasive nature and relative simplicity of collection. Saliva has proven to be a discriminating element in forensic arenas, an effective indicator of acute diseases of salivary glands, and a promising probe for drug monitoring. As a diagnostic fluid, saliva offers distinctive advantages over serum saliva. Sialochemistry is being applied to diseases of the salivary glands, clinical situations in which salivary flow rate and chemistry are helpful in diagnosis or monitoring patient progress. During the past few years an increasing number of investigators in a variety of disciplines have become interested in the potential of saliva as a diagnostic tool… This review examines the diagnostic application of saliva for diseases.
