Film holders play a vital role in radiation protection both directly and indirectly as they assist in accurate film placement, reducing mistakes, lowering frequency of retakes, reducing radiation exposure to patient's fingers thus avoiding phalangioma type of error on radiographic films. In addition to all these, film holders also reduces unnecessary patient exposure to radiation by incorporating shields with them. Although being an important constituent of radiation protection tool, film holders have been neglected over other accessories of dentistry. Only few literatures were published regarding film holders till today. So an attempt was made to review knowledge about film holders and their importance in radiation protection.
