Comparison of efficacy of chlorhexidine digluconate and hydrogen peroxide solutions on the adherence of Candida albicans to denture soft liner: An In vitro study

Abstract

Soft denture lining-materials are more susceptible to microbial adhesion than hard denture base acrylic resin. Poor oral hygiene and Candida albicans infection are common among elderly denture wearers as these patients usually have difficulty in keeping them clean.

To evaluate the effectiveness of two different disinfectant solutions on the adherence of candida albicans colonies over soft denture lining material.

Forty five 4 mm x 4mm x 1.5 mm standardized specimen were obtained. All samples were sterilized and submitted to candida albicans adherence testing by inoculating with candida albicans standardized suspension. After 48 hours of incubation at 37°C, the specimen were divided into three groups according to the disinfectant solutions used (Group- A: 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, Group- B: 3% hydrogen peroxide andGroup- C: distilled water as control). The adhered microorganisms were dispersed, diluted and plated onto culture media to determine the number of colony-forming units (cfu/ml).

The disinfectant solutions used for the study showed highly significant results. The number of candida albicans cfu/ml was lesser with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate when compared with hydrogen peroxide.

The disinfectant solutions have the efficacy to reduce the number of candida albicans colonies adhered to soft lining material but were inefficient to reduce all the adhered colonies.
