Various imaging methods are used as an aid in the periodontal diagnosis and evaluation of treatment outcome. Conventional radiography and Digital radiography are now widely accepted as standard periodontal imaging methods, but have their own advantages and disadvantages. With the technologic innovation numerous imaging methods have emerged over the years like Digital subtraction radiography, Computer assisted densitometric image analysis, Computed tomography(CT), Cone beam CT, Histomorphometry, Micro CT to name a few. In the following section an overview is provided about these periodontal imaging techniques and further focusing on the clear understanding of their respective limitations and capabilities, relationship between basic diagnostic principles and clinical applications.
