Abstract

To assess the prevalence of dental caries in 3-6year-old school children from rural and urban schools in Hassan.

To assess the knowledge, attitude & practice of oral hygiene in 3–6 years preschool children in Hassan.

To compare the Knowledge, attitude & practice and prevalence of dental caries between rural & urban children in Hassan.

To investigate related dental caries risk factors.

A cross-sectional study was carried out among 200, 3–6 years old children attending various Anganwadis centres & Unipark school in Hassan city, India, selected via simple random sampling. KAP was assessed by a set of open ended questionnaires. Caries experience was recorded using DEFT index (Greubbell, 1944). Chi-square tests were used to find significant differences. P < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

The prevalence of ECC in Hassan rural & urban is 38% & 70% respectively and also there is higher prevalence of ECC in male children(62.5%) compared to female children(44.8%) in total sample.

Rural children have good dental health compared to urban. It may be due to change in their dietary habits.
