Abstract

One of the most commonly used cranial landmarks for cephalometric tracing is Sella Point which is located in the center of the sella turcica with housing the pituitary gland in the cranial base. Any abnormality or pathology in the gland could manifest from an altered shape of the sella turcica and abnormal morphology of sella turcica may in fact reflect some undiscovered diseases. The purpose this study is to the establish the normative reference standards of sella and to determine variations due to gender or age in Davangere population, that could assist in more objective evaluation and detection of pathological condition.

A study group consisted of total 240 individuals, 120 males and 120 females. They were further divided in to various age groups of 5-10years, 10–15 years (above 10 years till 15 years) and 15–20 years with equal number of both males and females. Lateral cephalometric radiograph of each patient was made using standardized technique and contour of sella turcica was traced on an acetate tracing paper. Results were then statistically analyzed.

83% of subjects the shape of sella was found to be normal i.e. regular with smooth contour. A positive linear correlation was found with respect to dimensions of sella in all the three age groups. It can be concluded that dimensions of sella can be used as reference standards in assessment of age, but not gender.
