Abstract

Knowledge of structural anatomic variations in the Paranasal sinuses is of paramount importance. Certain anatomical variations of the sinuses may be clinically significant and may require identification prior to endonasal surgeries. Haller’s cell is one such clinically relevant anatomic variation of the ethmoid sinuses. These cells also known as infra orbital ethmoid cells by definition are those located below the ethmoid bulla, along the roof of the maxillary sinus and the most inferior part of the lamina papyracea. Their prevalence on various imaging studies have been found to be between 11% and 60%. They have also been implicated in headaches, sinusitis, nasal obstruction and chronic cough. This article attempts to review in brief the history, description, radiography, prevalence rates and clinical implications of Haller’s cells.
