Pollen selection for achieving desired traits in the hybrid is an emerging area in breeding technology for plant improvement. The derivation of haploid plants through anther and pollen culture, and its applicability in producing double hybrids (DH) has been demonstrated in several crops like wheat and rice. Survival as a haploid provides an immediate and efficient selection against deleterious and lethal genes. Pollen system as vector avoids scmaolonal variations and difficulties associated with protoplast regenerations. The male pollen specific gene transfer mechanism still warrants indepth knowledge building in pollen management in genetic modification or hybrid production.
