Abstract

The paper deals with the pollen morphology of 48 arborescent species belonging to 46 genera under 31 families from tropical forest distributed in lower Brahmaputra valley, Assam, North east India. The pollen shows a wide range of variations in respect of numbers, nature of apertures and sexine patterns. Despite pollen morphological details a concise account of the phenological characteristics including flowering/fruiting periods, mode of pollinations, habit and habitat along with economic importance of the species has also been incorporated in the study. The main objective of this study is to generate pollen morphological and phenological data with a view to identify sub fossil pollen grains and their interpretation in assessing palaeofloristics of tropical regions in Assam and adjoining areas.
