Abstract

The present study was conducted on secondary data on cotton crop in respect to area, production and yield from the year 1975–76 to 2017-8 in India as whole and Punjab in particular. The data was collected from the ICAR-Central Institute of Cotton Research. The analysis was done by the simple percentages, growth rates and trends for area, production and yield of cotton in India as whole and Punjab in particular and compared the results of area, production and yield of India and Punjab separately and Punjab in comparison to India. The compound growth rate of cotton area in India was 75.51, 72.51 and 88.71 percent during the period 1975–76 to 1984–85, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and 2004–05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton area was increased in almost constant rate during the three different periods. The compound growth rate of cotton area in Punjab was only 6.08, 6.99 and 6.47 percent during the period 1975–76 to 1984–85, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and 2004–05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton area was not increased much during the three different periods. It is almost negligible. The compound growth rate of cotton production in India was 63.99, 116.42 and 262.08 percent during the period 1975–76 to 1984–85, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and2004-05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton production was increasing continuously during the three different periods. The compound growth rate of cotton production in Punjab was only 12.77, 24.74 and 23.26 percent during the period 1975–76 to 1984–85, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and 2004–05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton production was not increased much during the three different periods. The compound growth rate of cotton yield in India was 144.17, 272.33 and 503.94 percent during the period 1975–76 to 1984–85, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and 2004–05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton yield was increasing continuously during the three different periods. The compound growth rate of cotton yield in Punjab was 356.80, 603.88and 604.08percent during the period 1975–76 to 198485, 1990–91 to 1998–99 and2004-05 to 2017–18.The compound growth rate of cotton yield was increasing in increasing rate in second period (1990–91 to 1998–99) as compared to first period (1975–76 to 1984–85)..
