Abstract

Determination of physical properties of horticultural and agricultural products is important in the design of harvesting, threshing and processing equipment. The physical properties of the cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) seed variety Avani-111 commonly grown in the District Sirohi (Rajasthan) in state of Rajasthan were evaluated at 9.01 12.15 15.63 and 18.23 percent seed moisture content (db). The spatial dimensions, average thousand mass of seed, bulk density, true density, porosity, angle of repose, terminal velocity were measured. The result of the study reveals that the average length, width, thickness, and geometric mean diameter at 9.01 to 18.23 percent moisture content (db) increased from 5.07 to 5.68 mm, 1.37 to 1.58 mm and 1.23 to 1.35 mm, 2.04 to 2.30 mm, respectively. The thousand seed weight was increased from 4.56 to 5.11 grams. The bulk density decreased from 455.82 kg/m3 to 403.34 kg/m3 with increase in percent moisture content (db). The true density and porosity increased from 1068.04 kg/m3 to 1120.78 kg/m3 and 57.32 percent to 64.01 percent with increasing moisture content of cumin seed. The angle of repose and a terminal velocity of cumin seed increased from 41.780 to 50.630 and 2.82 m/s to 4.21 m/s with increased levels of moisture content. The study reveals that the relationship between the moisture content and selected physical properties has the highly significant (ñ < 0.01) relationship except bulk density.
