The present study entitled “A study of the tribal belt college girls for Socio-Economic and cultural position ’’ Laid down at the Government Girls College, Kherwara. The college was inaugurated in AUG-2013.The Scheduled Tribes comprise about 8.6% of India's populationand were 49.7% of total population in Udaipur district of Rajasthan. Interaction between tribal communities and castes increased after independence manifolds with the expansion of education and communication facilities. Educational backwardness accounted for their socioeconomic backwardness. After independence State Government made very good effort to establishment of Middle School, Higher School and college education among the Adivasis. To promote the education among tribals districts government established Govind Guru Tribal University at Banswara. Now days, the presence of tribal students was quite high at all the level of education including primary, middle, secondary and college. During 2017–18 total 606 girls students were enrolled in different discipline at Government Girls College, Kherwarafrom various categories among them maximum number were 441 (72.8%) from ST category. However, maximum student was enrolled in Arts 77.4% followed by Science 20.1%. While, very less percentage 2.5% were enrolled in Commerce discipline. The results were revealed that the highest % of enrolled by the ST category depicting the good awareness and interest among the STs for college education. Majority of them opted Arts discipline and satisfactory numbers showed interest in Science Discipline. The results were indicating the enrolment of students in increasing order and it is good sign and showed the interest in college education year by year. The same trend was noticed for the science discipline also. Similarly, the ST category was exhibited the increasing order trend of enrolment in college for both the Arts and Science discipline.
Interestingly, it was noticed that despite of the 73.8% Mothers of college girls were illiterate, the girls are doing college education. Very poor education level was noticed for most of the parents of college girls. It all was made by the Government support.
Present study revealed that the majority of parents having 2 to 7 children and ranged from 1–10 children per family. The highest number of children was depicted 10 by one family followed by 9, 8 by one family each. Seven children observed in the 8 families followed by 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 children by the 18, 31, 43, 32 and 28 families, respectively. Income source of parents of college students were showed maximum for daily wages 94 (57.32%) followed by farming 54 (32.93%). While very less number of parents were doing Government service 6 (3.66%), Shopkeeper 5 (3.05%) and foreign labour 2 (1.22%).
Despite of the pressure of poor education level of parents, low income source, high number of children, most of parents support their children for the college education. It is a good sign that STs students are doing study in college and now becoming the part of main stream of India.
A good number of students were showed interest for blood donation but only one student per year donated blood. The rest of student failed due to either low body weight or low haemoglobin content. It was noticed a serious concern the poor health for almost all the students. Government should take the initiative to correct the same.
Scholarship and Other financial support by Government: Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of Rajasthan was providing the Post Metric Scholarship. However, House rent, Mahila Protsahan, Aarthik Sahayata, CM Scholarship, Scooty etc are the different schemes for encouragement of college education among girls.
After in-depth discussion of statistics, it was revealed that a large number of enrolment of STs students were made in college education at Government Girls College, Kherwara. The ST category was exhibited the increasing order trend of enrolment in college for both the Arts and Science discipline. However, since they attending college at regular level in college uniform that's a good sign of cultural change among the tribal girls for dressing sense. Besides, this they got financial support through various college education promotion activities, thus it was noticed socio economic change among the tribals. Various Youth Development Centre activities were also held for the overall development of the girls. Regular schedule of college also helping them to regular bathing, health & social awareness, increase communication skills. As a result of college education, they took part in the different competitive examination and scale-up their living standards including socialeconomic and cultural activities. The educated persons shifting from traditional to modern culture and finally, they becoming part of main stream of developing India.
