Safety Measures in Dealing With Dead

Abstract

Mortuaries in our countryand the dead bodies brought for postmortem examination pose a potential threat of hazards and risks to the mortuary staff as well as the persons handling the dead. Autopsy staff must be familiar with the types and categories of the hazards related to handling of the dead bodies before, during and after postmortem examination. It is also the legal, moral and ethical responsibility of the postmortem staff to be familiar with different preventive measures and precautions for safely dealing with the dead and the laws related to the proper management and disposal of the bio-medical waste produced during the procedures. Different types of hazards and risks while dealing with the dead, precautionary measures, the laws and the guidelines for management and disposal of the bio-medical waste produced in the morgue of a hospital are being discussed for sensitization of all concerned.
