Background and Objectives: Component based methods were used individually to study medial end of rib with reference to its pit depth, pit shape and rim and wall patterns. Factors such as sex differences and biomechanical variation between individuals may affect the determination of age from the rib. This study incorporates all these three components into a “collective component scoring†method to estimate age from female ribs as well as to ascertain whether there is any bilateral variation present for the said method or not.
Material and Methods: Materials for the present study were comprised of 70 rib samples obtained from female dead bodies brought to mortuary for post mortem examination. Each rib was given individual score in context to all three parameters pit depth, pit shape, rim-wall patterns. Collective component score was finally assigned to each rib by totalling of individual scores obtained.
Observation: Mean age increased with the number of collective component score. F-ratio was 4.353 and p value was 0.003 for left ribs and for right ribs F-ratio was 12.323 and p value was 0.000. Correlation coefficient was 0.963 for collective component scores.
Conclusion: Collective component scoring method is useful tool to estimate age from medial end of fourth ribs. Mean ages increase in accordance with the collective component scores. There is no any bilateral variation in relation to application of this method for age estimation.
