Orbital and Eye Ball Dimensions on Computed Tomography for Gender and Age Differences in Iranian Population

Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays, examination of skeletal components is frequently used for gender and age estimation. The present study aimed to assess the value of the orbital and eye ball dimensions on computed tomography for gender and age differences in Iranian population.

Materials and Methods: Present study was performed on 100 individuals (60 males and 40 females) with the age range of 18–87 years old who referred to Rasoul-e-Akram hospital in Tehran between 2008–2015 and subjected to orbital CT scanning because of different clinical reasons. Height of orbital margin, width of orbital margin, depth of orbit, and inter-orbital distances including sagittal, transverse, and axial dimensions of the orbit on both sides were measured in both genders using the orbital CT scan and reviewed on the Picture Archiving and Communication system (PACS).

Results: Comparing different orbital dimensions between men and women showed no difference except for only left orbital depth that was significantly higher in men as compared to women. Based on the values of area under the curve, none of the orbital dimensions have potential to discriminate between males and females.

Conclusions: The orbital dimensions may not be reliable parameters for gender identification in Iranian population.
