Introduction: Age estimation has been considered a critical requirement in a number of medico legal settings and needs forensic expertise. A varied number of methods have been in practice with variable findings. Age determination with epiphyseal union of clavicle has its own benefits specially in identifying if the person has attained age of maturity.
Aim: To identify the stage epiphyseal fusion of medial end of clavicle for determination of age in a tertiary population of North India, along with any differences between epiphyseal fusion of medial end of clavicle in both sides.
Methods:136 consenting volunteers of either sex between age group 16–25 years were radio graphed for medial end of clavicle bilaterally. The stage of ossification is identified according to Schmeling classification and age estimation is done.
Results: In this study no epiphyseal union is found in 22 participants ranging in age from 16–19 years. The first stage of fusion is seen at 16 years of age and extended upto 19 years of age. The stage of fusion on either side shows statistical significant association for age group indicating that stage of fusion is dependent upon the age of the person. The ossification stage is symmetrical on both side.
Conclusion: The present study concludes that epiphysis appeared in the range of 16–17 years and extended upto 19–20 years. The age of fusion of medial end of clavicle can be given as 22–24 years in the population of Haryana. Also, either side can be used for age
