Introduction:There are various means of suicide out ofwhich intentional or deliberate poisoning is one ofthe leading.
Materials and Method:The present study is a retrospective analysis of203 cases of death resulting from suicidal consumption of poisons. The cases were autopsied in a 5 year period between 2014 to 2018. The cases represented 3.4 % ofthe total autopsies during that period. Data were analyzed with respect to age, sex, type of poison, place of incidence, survival period, cause of death, seasonal variation.
Results and Conclusions:The poisoning deaths occurred most commonly in the age group 20 to 30 years (30.54%) with male predominance (60.09%). The cases presented in the Monsoon season most frequently. Deaths were mostly due to ingestion of pesticides i.e organophosphates and aluminium phosphide(14.28%) followed by corrosives (11.82%). 89.10% of the cases poisoning occurred in homes. Intention was known only in 9.85 % ofthe cases.
