Accidental deaths by burns injury in females of reproductive age: 2 Yr study

Abstract

Introduction: Burn injuries sustained by the Indian women while cooking food in the kitchen or working place comprise a unique entity in the Accidental burn epidemiology. Burn deaths in females are a major public health problem in our country.

Materials and Methods:Present study based on autopsy for the period of 2 year to evaluate epidemiological aspects of burn injury in the mortuary & Hospital situated in the metropolitan city of India.

Results:55.05% victims belonged to lower middle class, Hindu (69.19%). Housewives (84.34%), Married (86.87 %) females, educated middle school (26.77%), belonged to Suburban area (55.05%). Age group 21–25 yrs was more common affected (31.31%), married since more than 7 yrs (41.41%), victims survived for period of more than 7 days (32.83%). Accidental burns were most commonly by stove blast (74.75%) & victims sustained 51–75% TBSA burns (45.96 %), died from Septicemia (80.50%)

Conclusion:Most common married, housevies, belonged to young age were victims of Accidental burn injury. Considering the morbidity and mortality owing to burns, government and other social organizations need to put special efforts for the prevention and education programs against burn injuries.
