The succession of bacteria on rat carcass: A forensic study

Abstract

Introduction:The succession of micro-organisms especially bacteria on carcasses is very important in forensic sciences to estimate PMI and attract attention of many researchers in the recent years.

Materials and Methods:In this study, a culture dependent technique was followed. Dead adult female rats were used to check the succession of bacteria during decay process for estimation of postmortem interval (PMI). The bacteria colonies were checked in three habitats (skin, vagina and mouth) after death and subjected to biochemical tests for identification. The succession of bacteria communities were regularly registered.

Results:Staphylococcus aureus prevailed at the beginning of the PMI, especially in the 6 hours after death. Streptococcus fecalis developed with in 12hours, Lactobacillus casei and Neisseria lactamica developed at 1–2 days followed by Actinobacteria.
