Morphometry of greater sciatic notch in gender identification in hyderabad-karnataka region of South India

Abstract

Introduction: Identification of the sex from the skeletal remains is the prime work of forensic experts.

Materials and Methods: The present study is carried out to determine the sex of hip bone from width greater sciatic notch and total angle and anterior angle and posterior angle of greater sciatic notch. One hundred adult hip bones of known sex (50 male and 50 female) available in the department of Forensic medicine and Department of Anatomy, M R Medical College and KBN Institute of medical sciences, Gulbarga are used for present study.

Results and Conclusions: Among all the four variables statistically analyzed, the most reliable parameter is posterior angle, 14% of male and 76% of female hip bones that is, overall 45% of hip bones can be sorted out by this parameter alone. This parameter is found to be statistically significant.
