A study of deaths caused due to drowning in agra region

Abstract

Introduction: In our country, we frequently came across many cases of deaths due to drowning which may be suicidal or homicidal.

Materials and Methods: In this study 97 deaths caused by drowning were analyzed out of3224 autopsies conducted in mortuary of S. N. Medical College, Agra from March 2015 to August 2016 for the period of one and half years. Obtained data is analyzed and reviewed with respect to sex, manner, place and postmortem findings.

Results: Out of 97 cases 63.9 % (62 cases) were of males while 36.1 % (35 cases) were of females. Most cases were of age group 2130 year (21 cases-21.6 %). 64 out of 97 (66%) cases of drowning were accidental. External Postmortem findings reveals that Typical froth was seen in 78 cases (80.4%), Cutis anserine seen in 83 cases (85.6%). Internal Postmortem findings reveals that All cases were having mud/water in trachea and stomach.

Conclusions: In this study, accidental drowning seems to be major manner of deaths.
