Profile of Electrocution Related Mortality in Southern-Eastern Region of Rajasthan

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Electricity is an one of the most important blessings that science has given to mankind. It has also become a part of modern life and one cannot think of a world without it. Exposure to electrical energy may result in no injury at all or may result in devastating damage or death.

Aim:The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of electrocution related deaths.

Materials and Methods:1699 autopsy reports from Department of Forensic Medicine, Jhalawar Medical College, Jhalawar over a period of 5 years (from Jan. 2014 to Dec. 2018) were reviewed, of which 57 Electrocution cases were identified.

Results:Majority of victims were males belonging to the age group 21–40 years. Maximum deaths were accidental and were mainly in summer season. Most of fatalities were seen at workplaces. Most common site of entry mark was hand and of exit mark was sole.

Conclusions:The spread of awareness and adoption of safety measures are important factors for prevention of electrocution.
