Gasping respiration occurs during suffering and when the person is in agony. It may be the last respiratory pattern before terminal apnea. The extent of the gasping respiration phase may vary from one or two breaths to a more extended period of gasping, lasting minutes or even hours. Physiological distress or disruptions follow the terminal gasps. They may also lead to pathological consequences, which can be fatal, as in the present case.
A deceased was thought to be a victim of a road traffic accident, but an autopsy revealed something else, which appeared to be the consequence ofterminal gasps.
