Dowry death is an ugly truth in Indian society despite all the laws made by the government to curb this evil social practice and due to the decreasing faith of the general public in the Police, the Judiciary of India made some provisions in the Criminal code of Procedure, 1973 to empower Sub-Divisional Magistrate to investigate such cases of suspicious deaths of women within 7 years of marriage under.
In this retrospective study we have analyzed 419 cases of 3 years (2018 to 2020) of women dying within seven years of their marriage and came for medico-legal autopsy in the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, in which Sub-Divisional Magistrate had done the inquest.
The most common affected age group of deceased was 21-24 years and belongs to the Rural background. Most of the cases occurred during the evening hours and allegations of harassment/dowry were present in only 32.45% of cases. Majority of deaths were due to burn and were accidental in nature.
