Evaluation of height based on measurement of width, circumference, thickness of palm and width, circumference of the wrist in Iranian adults by gender

Abstract

Height and gender are among the most important biological profiles of a person for identification. Therefore, due to the diverse and wide range of height among people, accurate measurement can play an important role in reducing the number of suspects. The present study aimed to estimate the height by anthropometric dimensions of the palm and wrist in the Iranian population referring to Rasool Akram Hospital.

In this cross-sectional and analytical study, a total of 200 participants were included using the available sampling method, 100 males and 100 females with the age range of 18 to 50 years from 2019-2020 in Rasoul Akram Hospital, Tehran, Iran. Demographic information of patients including age, gender, and height was recorded. The width, circumference, and thickness of the palm and width and circumference of the wrist were measured using a measuring tape. The height has been measured using digital calipers. Version 16 of SPSS software was used for statistical analysis.

Among the male, there was a strong relationship between the size of the width and circumference of the palm and the width and circumference of the wrist with height (P <0.001). It was not possible to use a regression model to estimate women’s height using palm and wrist dimensions. Among men, only the p-value of palm width was less than 0.05.

According to the result, only the palm width of males can be used to estimate their height.
