Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of formalin on 1st year medical students. Exposure to formalin gives toxic effects on students. Formaldehyde is most commonly used embalming fluid in for preserving cadavers in anatomical dissection hall. Embalming without formaldehyde is, to most embalmers, just a meaningless historical footnote.

The present study carried out on 150 1st year medical students after consent them in Department of Anatomy Maharishi Markendeshwar Medical College and Hospital Solan.

Among 150 student’s acute effects of formalin reported on many medical students the most troublesome symptom develop was unpleasant smell. Nausea and watering of eyes, irritation of eyes followed by symptom most seen was headache, tiredness’ respiratory problem. We found students not using gloves, masks, spectacles regularly for dissection were at high risk for developing these symptoms.

formalin has toxic effects on body so proper precautions should be taken.
