Epidemiology, Disparities and Psychosocial Ramifications of Maxillo-Facial Traumatic Injury: Need for Public Health Intervention

Human face includes the mouth, nose, cheeks, and eyes. Maxillofacial region constitutes the front part of face and is composed of the several bones like frontal, nasal, ethmoid, zygomatic, maxillary and mandible. Maxillofacial Traumatic injury (MFTI) or maxillofacial injury is an injury to the face, jaws and related structures. Normal appearances are important for interpersonal interaction in society, among colleagues and friends. This study tries to evaluate the regional epidemiological factors and social determinants and health disparities. Study also describes psychological, social and economic consequences of MFTI among patients and their families.

MFTI patients (select district at Punjab, India) were followed from treatment start to complete clinical recovery. Data collection included demographics, etiology and clinical condition and socio-economic factors. Responses were then analyzed by descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentage.

Epidemiologically psycho-socio-economic factors a related to Maxillofacial traumatic injury. Its impact is different from other injuries. It impacts clinically, economically, psychologically and socially as well. Inter-professional approach is required for its appropriate management. Findings of the study highlight the magnitude of consequences and multimodal approach required for management of MFTI.
