Abstract

An increased incidence of Near drowning cases has been seen in recent past due to increased awareness of resuscitative efforts amongst lay person and advanced healthcare. Statistical information in near drowning cases is not available to obtain a ratio of those who have been resuscitated and left with or without residual organ damage. However Acute kidney injury in near drowning is now a common event.

A young male suffered non-oliguric acute kidney injury following neurogenic acute respiratory distress syndrome consequent to a near drowning episode. He received five sessions of haemodialysis andhas completely recovered renal function without any residual protein loss or hypertension.

Commonly affected organs like brain and lungs were not involved and acute tubular injury was documented in this case. Early recognition of signs and serial monitoring of serum creatinine levels with timely intervention helped in resolution of symptoms and improvement without any residual damage to organs. This is a rare case where acute tubular injury was reported after episode of near drowning and lead to a complete recovery.
