Study of Cranial Sutures at Autopsy for Estimation of Age

Abstract

Age is an important criterion for the identification of an individual and is important for social and medico-legal purposes whether in living, dead or in skeletal remains.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of cranial sutures namely coronal, sagittal, lambdoid, temporo-parietaland basiocciput-basishpenoid sutures, at autopsy for estimation of age.

All these sutures were studied both ectocranially and endocranially, except basiocciput-basisphenoid which was studied only endocranially. A total of 280 cases of age group 18 years and above were studied using Acsadi-Nemeskeri scale.

Cranial sutures fused earlier on the endocranial surface than the ectocranial surface. When the total sample was studied, significant correlation with age was found in fusion of right coronal suture, lambdoid suture at the age of 36 to 55 years, sagittal and temporoparietal at the age of more than 76 years. Sagittal and lambdoid suture closure was found earlier in males. Coronal and temporoparietal sutures closed earlier in females.
