The human lip holds a considerable variation in the groove pattern and have been used as a tool for identification as commonly found on many surfaces (cups, glasses, cigarette butts, etc.). This study was done to identify the pattern among the population and also to evaluate the relevance of the impression left on different surfaces with the standard lip prints using superimposition technique by Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
The present study is comprised of 100 subjects of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh between 18-30 years.
The predominant lip print patterns in male subjects are (TYPE I’) followed by (TYPE III) whereas in female subjects, it is (TYPE II) and (TYPE I’) and (TYPE V) is the least and rarely found in both of the male/female samples also white clay cups had shown highest percentage of matching with first attempt prints, while steel tumblers had the lowest. Similarly the results were observed during the second attempt.
The present study showed that the lip prints have a great potential to be used as an added measure in sex determination. Further more lip prints found on white clay cups were most suitable for super imposition.
