Abstract

Estimation of the age of an individual from the appearance and the fusion of the ossification centres is considered a reasonable scientific method and a well-accepted fact in the field of medical and legal professions. Countable differences may be noticed in the time sequence of appearance and union of the ossification centres depending upon race, sex and geological distribution. The ossification process may also be influenced by food, nutritional status and physical activity, hormonal and metabolic disturbances.

The primary objective of this study was to ascertain the status of epiphyseal fusion of long bones at the wrist & elbow joint for estimation of age.

The study comprised a total of 246 subjects (151 male & 95 female) in the age groups from 7 to 18 years from the western region of West Bengal. X-rays of both elbow and wrist joint were taken antero-posterior & lateral view. The films were studied radiologically by interpreting the ossification into stages. Data were analyzed with SPSS IBM version 22.0.

The study reveals the age of appearance and fusion of ossification centres around wrist & elbow joints in the Bengali population which corroborate with standard values in some cases and some do not match. This helps to estimate the age of individuals for medico-legalpurposes.
