Luminescent techniques have been widely used to enhance weak and faint fingerprints that are most commonly encountered at crime scenes. The process involves illumination of the developed prints to a light source, including laser. However, the degree of clarity achieved, the cost of light source, the type of evidence being processed and the nature of luminescent composition are often limiting factors in this endeavour.
Evaluation of cost-effective, non-toxic, fluorescent powder formulations in developing weak, chance fingerprints on a broad spectrum of surfaces is done. The results have been analyzed on the basis of quality of prints and the shelf life of the compositions.
Good quality fingerprints were detected on all surfaces.
