Fingerprints are one of the prevalent evidence collected from the crime scene and mostly considered corpus delicti. Only one fingerprint evidence is sufficient to determine the direction of investigation. However, fingerprint forgery emerging as major concern as this may mislead the investigation. Such cases increasing day by day specially ‘Will and testaments’ related cases where fingerprint is the only evidence of genuineness.
The objective of this research is to explore the effectiveness of iodine potassium iodide for detecting and distinguishing forged polyvinyl acetate-based fingerprints from the real fingerprints. Its effectiveness in combination with conventional methods has been observed by pre and post application of the stain for detecting forged fingerprints.
This study concludes that the iodine potassium iodide stain is effective in differentiating real and forged fingerprints.
