The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of the London Atlas of Human Tooth Development and Eruption for age estimation in south Indian children and adolescents (aged 10-20 years), for forensic odontology application.
This Retrospective study analyzed orthopantomograms (OPGs) of the complete dentition to estimate the deviation from chronological age. Each OPG was analyzed and classified into age-groups by the author and the guide, using the methods of the Atlas of Tooth Development.
OPGs from a total of 394 patients [198 males, 196 females] aged 10-20 years were examined in this study. The average estimated and chronological ages of subjects differed significantly .405% estimates were within 12 months of subjects’ chronological age and. 60% of the subjects mean absolute difference was within 1 to 2 years and a total mean difference and for whole sample group was 1.04 years.
This study, conducted in a other population identified variation in age estimates that may have significant impacts on results. The establishment of a composite international repository of atlas based data for diverse ethnic sub-populations would be of great value to clinicians across the globe.
