Cheiloscopic Variation in a Population of New Delhi: A Study with a Review of Lip Print Patterns in Different Population Types

Abstract

“Cheiloscopy” deals with the identification of humans based on lip traces or prints. The patterns of lip prints are unique for every individual and do not change with time and can be used for the purpose of forensic investigations.

The sample size of 200 (100 males and 100 females) aged 18years and above have valid identification proof. Lip prints were collected and analyzed as per Suzuki's classification.

Partial length groove running vertically across the lip (Type I’) is the most common (28.5%) lip print that is seen in the whole lip of the New Delhi population in visible lip prints.

The study was conducted with the aim to determine the most common lip print pattern on the whole lip. According to the findings, each individual’s lip print is unique, and the lip print pattern can be utilized as an additional means of identification of an individual. This paper reviews that lip prints have no racial differences and thus cannot be used for population identification.
