Prediction of stature from hand dimensions in Jat Sikhs of north India

Abstract

Stature estimation is a crucial component of medicolegal investigations that require the identification of a victim. Hand dimensions are often used to estimate stature, and this study aims to investigate the correlation between hand dimensions and stature among Jat Sikhs of Punjab, an endogamous group within the North Indian population.

The study measured hand length and breadth as well as stature for 300 subjects between the ages of 18 and 30 at Punjabi University, Patiala. Univariate and multivariate linear regression equations were developed to predict stature based on hand dimensions.

The results showed significant variations in hand dimensions between males and females (p<0.01), with a positive and significant correlation between hand dimensions and stature.

The study concludes that hand length is a more effective predictor of stature than hand breadth for both males and females.
