Abstract

Rice, occupying an enviable prime place among the food crops. Sheath blight caused by Rhizoctoniasolani kuhn is one of the most wide spread and destructive diseases of rice. It is prevalent in almost all rice growing areas of the world. The efforts to evolve resistant varities to sheath blight have met with a limited success due to lack of suitable resistant donor parents. None of them among 142 genotypes were found immune against R.solani Genotypes Aditya was found resistant genotypes viz., Swarna, IR-64 and Mandya Vijaya were moderately resistant, 73 genotypes were moderately susceptible, 57 genotypes were susceptible, eight were found highly susceptible. Genotypes showing resistant and moderately resistant ones under filed conditions were artificially inoculated with R. solani using ``straw bit" method in pot culture and ``sheath inoculation" in humid chamber. Aditya showed resistance Swarna showed moderately resistance, IR-64 and Mandya Vijaya moderately susceptible. Even in sheath Inoculation technique" also the reaction of genotypes was similar to that of straw bits method.
