The soybean mosaic virus (SMV) was observed to be easily mechanically transmitted to test plants when the inoculum was prepared in 0.1M Phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Soybean upper leaves showed characteristic mosaic symptoms like light and dark green patches. SMV was recovered at the greater extent from leaves of the diseased plant. Among the insect vectors viz., aphids and whiteflies, only aphids (Myzus persicae Sultz) transmitted the SMV from soybean to soybean (80%). The SMV under study was seed borne in nature and accounted for 6–8 per cent seed transmission.
