Abstract

Cellulose based edible coating - carboxy methyl cellulose of various concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) were tried on fresh kinnow fruits in order to extend the marketing period. Coating was applied by immersion method. Coated and uncoated kinnows were stored in open tray, low density and high density polyethylene bags (200 gauge) under ambient conditions (during the period of experiment, the temperature and relative humidity varied from 18–28°C abd 55–65 percent respectively). It was found that the carboxy methyl cellulose (0.5%) coating on kinnow and packed in high density polyethylene bags extended the shelf-life of kinnow upto 40 days without adversely affecting the quality.
