A total of 12 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were used to study their pathogenicity after inoculating approximately 107 cells per milli liter per mice. After 21 days, mice were sacrificed and histopathological studies were carried out. Major changes in liver, lungs and kidneys were infiltration of lymphomononuclear cells along with formation of granulomas. One strain also showed formation of abscesses in lungs. Intestines showed catarrhal enteritis with infiltration of lymphomononuclear cells. Similar changes were observed with standard reference strain IP 1105. Public health significance of these findings has been discussed.
