The present study was undertaken to explore (a) the extent of use of energy conserving practices by the rural families of Punjab (b) the constraints in use of energy conserving practices by the rural families. A sample of 300 rural families of Punjab from three districts viz., Amritsar, Faridkot and Jalandhar was selected with the help of multistage random sampling technique. The data was collected through well constructed Interview schedule by paying personal visits to the rural families. Data was analysed with the suitable statistical tools. The results of the study indicated that majority of the rural respondents were not even aware of most of the energy conserving practices, therefore they were not using these practices to conserve energy in their homes. However there were few energy conserving techniques such as reducing evaporation, heat losses by covering cooking containers and soaking pulses before cooking etc. about which rural families were well aware and they were fully or partially using these practices in daily routine. Lack of knowledge was the main constraint faced by the majority of rural families for practicing the energy conserving techniques.
